Brig. Gen. Troy E. Armstrong succeeded Brig. Gen. Zachary Doser as the land component commander of the Nevada Army Guard in November 2020. In his position, he commands and oversees the more than 3,300 Soldiers in the Nevada Army Guard.



Armstrong was born in Minot, North Dakota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1988 and completed infantry training at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1991, following graduation from Moorhead State University, he relocated to Nevada and joined the Nevada Army Guard. He enrolled in the Nevada OCS program and received his commission as a second lieutenant of Armor in 1996.

As a commissioned officer, Armstrong has served in every command position from platoon leader through brigade command. He mobilized in 2001 with the 72 nd Military Police Company in support of Operation Noble Eagle and again in 2003 and 2005 as the unit’s Commander in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. In 2007, Armstrong was assigned as the Senior Enemy Prisoner of War Officer for the 140th Military Police Brigade Liaison Detachment. In 2008, he deployed with the unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as the Deputy J7 for Task Force 134 (Detention Operations), Multi-National Forces Iraq.

From 2009-2015, Armstrong served in the 17th Sustainment Brigade as a Battalion and Brigade Support Operations Officer and Deputy Brigade Commander. In 2015, he assumed command of the 17th Special Troops Battalion and deployed with the unit in 2016 in support of Operation Spartan Shield, providing theatre gateway and personnel services support throughout CENTCOM. In 2018, following his assignment to Joint Forces Headquarters and his completion of Senior Services College, Armstrong assumed command of the 17th Sustainment Brigade.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Iraq Campaign Medal (2 Bronze Stars), and the Global War on Terrorism Expedition and Service Medals.
